What You Need to Bring to Inpatient Physical Therapy

After a knee or hip replacement, your doctor will determine if you’re able to be discharged to your home. If not, you’ll need to have inpatient physical therapy. This usually means a temporary stay at a skilled nursing facility like Brook Stone.

There are a few things you’ll need before you start inpatient rehab physical therapy, so you’ll want to have the following list handy.

Checklist of Items You Need When Going to Inpatient Physical Therapy

Shirts/ Blouses

We recommend that women bring five washable blouses. These should have buttons down the front. Men should bring five comfortable shirts.

The key is that we want to be sure you have loose-fitting clothes, whether they are pullover or not. You’ll be doing a lot of movement during your physical therapy, and we want to make sure that you’re comfortable.

Underwear

Men should bring three T-shirts and seven or more pairs of undershorts. Women should bring three bras (or undershirts) and seven or more pairs of underwear.

Pants

Again, loose-fitting clothing is key. We recommend washable slacks or sweatpants with elastic waistbands for both men and women. Do not bring blue jeans.

Socks

Men and women should bring five pairs of socks. Avoid those with tight elastic tops.

Shoes

Your shoes must have non-skid soles. Make sure they fit well. Women should only bring flat shoes.

Toiletries

This includes:

  • Comb or brush
  • Shampoo
  • Toothpaste and toothbrush
  • Deodorant
  • Makeup

List of Medications

While we will have access to your medical records, we still suggest that you bring a list of your current medications. Please include any over-the-counter medications you take, as well as any herbal or natural remedies.

You do not need to bring your actual medication.

Other Items

You may want to include a jacket or sweater. In addition, be sure to bring a laundry bag. We suggest that you label all clothes with your name.

Be sure to pack pajamas, and be sure any slippers have non-slip soles.

Items You May Want to Consider Bringing

We encourage you to do activities in your free time that won’t interfere with your physical therapy. These may include books, magazines or crossword puzzles.

You might want to bring a notebook with a pencil or pen to record important notes or keep a journal of your thoughts and feelings. Most important, don’t forget your reading glasses!

Remember that, while we provide delicious, homemade meals at Brook Stone, you may want to bring your own snacks such as granola bars. Just be sure to check with us first to be sure they meet any dietary restrictions.

Be sure to bring phone chargers and a tablet if you’d like to use email to stay in touch with family and friends.

We Encourage You To Bring Personal Items

Do you have some family photos or a special blanket that will make our inpatient rehabilitation facility feel like home? Bring them!

Items You Should Not Bring to Physical Therapy

Don’t bring valuable items or large amounts of money. We also request that you leave the perfume or cologne at home, as some of our residents may be sensitive to smells.

Bring Medicare Information to Inpatient Physical Therapy

When you are admitted to inpatient physical therapy, be sure you bring your Medicare card and any other medical information that is relevant. We’ll walk you through the admissions process.

Does Medicare Cover Physical Therapy?

Yes, Medicare will cover the costs of care in an inpatient rehabilitation facility.

In order to be eligible, your doctor must state that going to a rehab facility is medically necessary.

Medicare Inpatient Physical Therapy Guidelines

In Original Medicare, your costs include:

  • Days 1-60: $1,364 deductible.*
  • Days 61-90: $341 coinsurance each day.
  • Days 91 and beyond: $682 coinsurance per each “lifetime reserve day” after day 90 for each benefit period (up to 60 days over your lifetime).
  • Each day after the lifetime reserve days: all costs.

*Because Medicare changes periodically, we recommend that you speak with your Medicare representative to be sure of your coverage.
